During Lent, the prayer of the universal Church focuses on the elect (those to be baptized at the next Easter Vigil), praying for these final weeks of preparation and for their protection. Even the readings and liturgical prayers are changed at Masses where elect are present and the Scrutinies are celebrated.
The Scrutinies are rites for the elect celebrated on three designated Sundays of Lent, but can be fruitful opportunities for our own prayer and Lenten journeys. They are to “reveal what is weak, sick, and sinful in the hearts of the elect so that it can be healed; and what is honorable, strong and holy, so that it can be strengthened” (OCIA 141). Their goal is to “purify minds and hearts, to fortify against temptations, to convert intentions, and to awaken the will, so that the elect may cling more closely to Christ and pursue more vigorously their desire to love God” (OCIA 141).
They occur three times to remind them, and us, that the leaving behind of sin and the embracing of a grace-filled life is a life-long journey – while baptism cleanses us of sin, we must consistently strive to overcome personal sin and seek the spiritual resources to do so.
The Scrutinies include particular prayers for the elect, a minor exorcism to deliver them from any influence of evil, and a deeper study of the Gospel proclaimed that day. Join us in praying for our 40 adults and young people who will be baptized at the Easter Vigil, as well as all the elect throughout the world who will become our brothers and sisters in Christ through baptism in just a few short weeks!
