It is good for us to meditate on the Sabbath —after the creation of the world, God took time to rest on the seventh day. Thus, He made this day special and even holy. For the Hebrews, this was Saturday — which is evident in other languages (Spanish, for example: sábado). But due to the glorious Resurrection of Christ on the“8th day”, that is, the Lord’s Day (domingo), Christians have always celebrated the Sabbath on Sunday.
And so it is important to observe Sunday as a special, holy day! If we do the same things on Sunday as we do any other day, then are we really observing it properly?
Thus, on Sunday, we must attend Mass (yes, the Saturday Vigil counts) and rest from “servile labor”. This essentially means that we shouldn’t work for anybody else or work for money — so working around the house is fine. Obviously, there are times when work on Sunday is unavoidable, but effort should be made to reduce these occurrences.
Furthermore, we shouldn’t buy things not of necessity on Sundays. After all, we shouldn’t make anyone else work, right? This would also apply to business owners — you shouldn’t require your employees to work on Sunday.
Let us reflect— do I make Sunday a holy day for myself and my family, or do I treat it like any other day? Do I make every effort for me and my family to attend Mass, even when travelling? Do I take rest from work seriously, for myself and for those around me?
